I use plastic some. It is a great way to get the soil a bit warmer for the seeds to sprout.

I use white plastic because it also reflects light up, and light is the premium here in my garden.

With white plastic peas can go in a month earlier than without.

White plastic does not stop the weeds, but the weeds are extra fragile and scrunched up under there. Slice the plastic open and yank them easily. Especially if your soil is fluff.

I will also be adding a strip of plastic at the back of the east bed since it is so close to the chicken wire. Planting things too close to the edge allows things to stick out tempting the deer.

I also use white plastic on the wall sides of the north wall of my garden. It reflects a lot of light.

All these things extend the gardening season.

Marshallsmyth, I agree about the white plastic. I covered my 2nd carrot/tomato bed for 2 weeks, and the chickweed, dandelions and other weeds did come out pretty easily.
I'm gonna try my black shower curtains on 2 beds, starting tomorrow, to see what kind of weed damage they can cause. If they don't work, I guess I'll pull out my two 2'x6', 1/4" rubber mats on them.

When I was a kid during the mid paleolithic we used wooly mammoth hides. Had to keep a fire going around the perimeter of the garden all summer to keep the glacial wind off the garden.
