veggies on a trellis?

I tried the square foot garden trellis method last year for all of my vining crops. It worked really well until we had a storm with straight 60 mph winds.
My huge banana melons were ripped off and took most of the vines down with them.

this is great! I am getting a nice list of things to try on a trellis' in the new garden. I can't wait til spring gets here and I can actually do something productive outside. Teasing days like today are just mean, when it looks sunny and beautiful out and you get out there and it is friged.

With my recent Jung Seed order (www.jungseed.com) I ordered 60 ft. of trellis netting which they call 'tomato trellis.' I'm going to use this to vertical grow pole beans and cucumbers.

Using different sections of backyard chain-link fence, I'm going to grow cantaloupe, butternut squash, and birdhouse gourd.

I am re-opening this thread to ask a question....
I am putting in a garden where we took out abouve ground pool down. I want to put rellis on the side of the deck that was against the pool. It's pretty much inaccesable under the deck. What are the chances of me getting veggies growing on the "inside" of the fence where I can't harvest them easily? There would be VERY little sunshine on that side of the trellis.

Just keep an eye on them, and pull them through to the side you can reach before they are too big :)

And a reply to the OP as well, anything that vines can be grown on a trellis. For bigger things like melons, you can use some old (or new) pantyhose to tie the melons to the vine, so they don't pull it down. The pantyhose is stretchy, so it gives the melon room to grow, but still strong enough to not weigh down the vines :) Just slip the foot part of the hose over the melon and tie it to the trellis.

I planted everything in squarefoot gardens last year. It worked really, really well! I had enough to share and can, freeze, dry.
Do you have the newest squarefoot garden book?
I have an older one and the new one. The new one is much easier to use/understand.

I'm only changing one thing this year. I planted different things in squares like the book suggests, but then I had onions growing next to kale and radishes and peas....ect. ect.
With the onions, for example, you need to stop watering after the tops start to dry off, but if there are other plants like tomatoes planted next to the onions, it's really hard not to water both at the same time.

So....I'm doing sectional squarefoot garden.

I do love that you can fit different plants into extra spaces.
I grew 2 5gallon pails full of beets in the same bed with 6 tomato plants last year!

I am combining square foot with regular gardening . I am sure that I could get much more if I square footed the whole thing.. but I am using rows and raised beds . and finding little places for plants.. all over using square foot guides for places that I find...
