Very new to gardening--I would like some help choosing first veggies

That will be a very interesting and fun first garden. Each of those has a challenge.

Chick peas, Garbanzos, are easy to grow, but need to grow well to make full good sized peas.

Onions can be tricky or slow, so patience with them.

Herbs for pickling, dill, fennel, anise, usually easy enough to grow, but the kitchen work with pickling is beyond me, but some of the folks here are world class!

In the bay area, you can plant onions till the end of March. Mine were planted about a month ago and are about 5" tall. You can plant herbs from pots year round, I'm not sure when the planting time for seeds are.
