I have some Evening Sun sunflowers to start, and sunchokes to plant. I hope that maybe I can use them to shade part of the house this summer.

I can't see the picture either, though. :/

Here is a current picture. They are way too crowded, but lately some of mammoth russians have been filling out. Have to get them covered soon as the birds have found the smaller heads from the reds. They will make a nice snack for the chickens this fall!:)

I cut my sunflower heads hoping to dry them for the chickens for the winter and they went moldy on me...so they only got a few heads which they loved...next year I will be more careful how I handle them...

Love it! Those are very nice. Gotta have sunflowers...it's just not summer without them. They are so cheerful! It makes me instantly happy to look out the window at them. I've really been enjoying mine for cut flowers. I planted 7 packets of different kinds this year. I hope the wind will be kind to yours. Mine got blown over a little by a freak storm, but they're not on the ground at least.

Come to think of it it Journey, the wind has been kind to us. Most years there has been some sweet corn lost to a windy thunderstorm. That also means it has been very dry here since mid July. The pasture looks like something from Death Valley but at least I can water the garden all it needs. Good Luck!:)

Beautiful sunflowers. I had a few sunflowers this year. I planted some then saw a blue jay taking the seeds. So I started some in pots and planted them when they got bigger. Of those a deer ate a few and trimmed a few. Then the deer ate the flowers off some of the mini sunflowers I had. They also stripped all the leaves off the plants when they got taller. This is the first year the deer have bothered my sunflowers.

Oh. How Beautiful! I am jealous!

My DH planted some sunflowers for me this spring, or so he said. He has a "green field" behind our house that he plants for the deer every fall and spring. He planted about 30 lbs. of sunflower seeds in an area 30' X 150' and said he did it so I would have flowers to look at this fall. Well, I was impressed (and a bit confused) because he cares NOTHING about flowers or gardening and has always left that stuff entirely up to me! Then, I noticed that the doe that hangs out on our place was spending time there in "my" sunflower patch. Alot of time. ALL the time. The plants were thick and looked good until they got about two feet high. Once they started putting on buds, the deer (doe and her buddies) got the best of the patch. They ate leaves, branches, and buds and left nothing but a field of stalks! I suspected that DH knew the deer would eat them. My suspicions were confirmed when I said, "At least the deer got to enjoy the sunflowers." He mumbled something about not thinking they would eat ALL of them!

 :gig
