Greetings, This is an older thread but, may I say: Dirt and sand in the water, sounds like you're on a well. May show what we did in this regard?
We had the problem, sand, caused problems. Installed a strainer, found it at Lowe's. It has a stainless steel screen, and will remove bits that will hurt washer in your home and is easy to clean.
Maybe you already installed something like it.

This type can be installed even if you're on town water.
