I have Sugar Baby, Moon & Stars, and Black Daimond. I figure I will plant at least 2 of each. I would be interested to hear how the panty hose experence works out... It might be worth a try. :clap

I'm doing sugar babies this year. I've been contemplating using panythose and such to help it to "climb" our fence. I'm still working the details in my head though.
I've got some Hokaido melons (the ones that sold for 6000 dollars in Japan last year) that I'm growing (hoping for that 6000 dollar pay day LOL) and I know those melons are grown in little nets to keep them up off the ground. Mine will just have to be happy laying on a bed of straw like all the other melons.

Yep. They're supposed to be delicious and the flesh is a little redder but it's a cantaloupe. I don't even like cantaloupe but I planted the Hokaido and Charantais for my husband.

Our idea of weed control is walking around in the garden a lot and running a rake lightly over everything each evening after work. We only have a few weeds that ever need pulled. DH talked about using straw for a few things this year, might give it a go.

This is my "you're not getting any straight answers outta me today" answer. It depends. It depends on what kind of watermelon you are growing, how big you want them to get and what kind of growing conditions you have that year. The smaller melons I just let go and set as much fruit as they want but with the bigger melons if they start about 25 blossoms none of my melons are going to be very big or flavorful so I pinch some off. Also if we're having a lot of heat and dry weather, I'll pinch some off to make sure I get as much nutrition into the melons I can get to grow....

Ohhhh good to know! I will be sure to watch how many blossoms set on the larger ones.

Not Watermellons, but why did my pumpkin vines only get 2 fruits last year and they died before the fruit got more than 3 lbs?
