So... how do I know when to harvest the watermelon? They have a hallow sound when you thump 'em.... but they're ALL green!

It is unfortunate, that we know them only as "watermelon". Makes it hard to determine....Is the little tendril dried up and brown? If you have several, you might just have to pick one and give it a try. If that is a sugarbaby it looks ready- but, we really won't know, until you slice it open. Keep us posted.

Wait until it starts to separate from the melon on its own, or becomes to brown so you know its done absorbing nutrients as its ripened.

Or just pick and choose like we do! LOL

If you have enough going, you can always try one and see... if that fails for me, I give it to the chickens, they don't mine. :)

What about checking the area the watermelon is touching the ground, if there's a big yellow spot its ripe. Has anyone ever used this method with success? :hu

Greenthumb- I forgot about that tip. The yellow spot and the tendril, together are a pretty sure thing....

huh.... I didn't know they developed the yellow spot! I just assumed that it was from not getting sun!

Not getting sun on that side allows you to see color change in the rind as they ripen.

Another one of those experience things . . .

I know very little about watermelons of different varieties but suspect that that makes a difference.

I am going to check mine today, though I'm pretty sure they need at least another week. They all sound hollow, and they all have the yellow spot from the ones on the ground. However, I have several hanging on a trellis with no yellow or discolored area at all... and they may never get that?! :idunno

Ours are NOT on a trellis... LOL I think next year we're going to have to try that method tho. Holy MOLEY! The vines are EVERYWHERE! They started taking over just about everything... LOL So much so that we can't get in to pull the grass and weeds and whatnot. :/
