watermelon harvest??

I don't know, a tried to figure it out too. A couple of years ago I was trying to judge and my brother said it sounded like it wasn't ready. I decided to cut a triangle to chech it out, it split in half because it was so ripe. It was delicious but all the other methods weren't right.

Here's a different angle. I have an heirloom melon (sugarlump) that averages 5-6 lbs. when ripe. There are no tendrils between the main vine and the fruit;this side vine is 4-5 inches long. There are 6 melons on the main vine from 2-5 lbs. with the largest being the first one on the vine. I have heard that the vine will split when it's time to pick but this is the first time with this variety and i don't want to sacrifice one if at all possible! Hep me!
