I need to figure out a way to water orchard. I tried a gas pump from the stream, but to much muck kept clogging pump. This time of year stream a thick sludge . I just put up one rain barrel off greenhouse, but don't think it will be enough. My only other choice is hauling water from house. I have 55 gallon barrels wondering how heavy they will be ( have to cross my homemade bridge). I know water can be very heavy.

Each gallon of water is 8.34 pounds, so 55 gallons would be 458.7 pounds, plus weight of barrel.

I used a calculator. :D I only knew the weight because my husband has over 200 tropical fish.

DH always says a pints a pound the world around. So a gallon of water would weigh 8 pounds.(more or less)

Not to belabor my point but this would be so much easier with metric measurements :\.

NyBoy, I bet you aren't gonna like how this works out. There is a lot of water needed by plants. I did too much rounding and maybe spun out on a curve, someplace.

There are about 7.5 gallons to a cubic foot. A cubic foot of water would cover 12 square feet with 1 inch of water.

Your barrel of 55 gallons (about 7.4 cubic feet) would cover about 88 square feet of ground with 1 inch of water.

Don't forget to add the weight of the trailer you're transporting the water in to the weight going over the bridge.

Is it too far to run a series of hoses out there?

Well water, is kind of far for hoses . Would use a garden hand cart rated for 600 pounds.
Why not put in a waterline underground from the well to the trees with a hose bib out there. Before winter time drain the water out of it...
