Very SAD but very true these days ... from personal experience as well as observation for the last few years ... when some illegals now living in the US ( such as those that arrived here as kids and educated in the US ) are given contractors licenses , we the public consumers of remodels are paying the price in terms of them undercutting bids, starting work without a signed contract, sub-quality work, substituting materials that were NOT original agreed to, ordering materials then taking a number of the delivered materials to another job and followed by another delivery with some or all of the materials being taken away to another job. The workers are illegals too that do can NOT speak or understand a word of English so you can not even talk to them when you know something is being amiss. The contractor takes every advantage of these illegals by charging them for transportation , food and lodging and takes it out of their pay . They also demand that the consumer pay him in CASH so he does NOT have to show additional income as being received. They also pocket any moneys due for taxes, SS, health insurance, etc. from their workers as the illegals are totally ignorant of what is actually happening to them . If the illegals start to ask questions of the contractor, he/ she starts to rant and rave at them and threatens them with being turned in for deportation. Many are being blackmailed to work as virtural slaves. I have personally witnessed this a couple times at my ranch in Cal. as well as here in Wa. last year when I hired a contractor to install Hardy Board siding on our home last year.I turned him into Wa. Labor and Industries Board. Quite a few IRS audits are very interesting too along similar lines.
