Last night we had our first real frost of the fall, about 2 weeks early. Luckily, I was expecting it, and covered up the veggies in the raised bed (beets, spinach, carrots).

Glad you were able to cover everything.

It seems so weird to me to have such cold weather so early.
I have lived here in Florida for most of my life, we moved here when I was 4.5 years old.

Good luck I hope your veggies made it.

I am dreading our first frost. I'm trying to devise a way to protect my tomatoes because we usually have a light frost then no other freezing temps for a few more weeks then we'll get hit with the hard one. I'm thinking I will put up supports and "wrap" the tomato bed with plastic and put a heat lamp in there....dunno. still working out the idea kinks...

Hoping your veggies were OK. :)

We also had our first frost of the season last night, about a week early. The way the weather has gone this season, I'm glad it was only one week early. I also protected my stuff and need to go remove the sheets. I got queen and double sized sheets pretty cheaply at the thrift store, btw.

I know some of the stuff, beets, carrots, cabbage, kale, chard are supposed to be able to take a light frost, but I normally cover mine anyway. Although they are not supposed to be bothered, I find some of them get bit anyway.

BDR, good luck with the tomoatoes. I just let mine go last night. I had enough other stuff to do yesterday.

Joseph, I hear what you are saying. A couple of times when I was living ouside of New Orleans, I did not get my first frost until March. And a couple of years, I never got a frost.

We're expecting our first frost tonight!

I am so not ready and not looking forward to it. Gotta watch my carrots, cabbage and broccoli.

On an unrelated note, I find it very disconcerting that there is a Crate & Barrel CHRISTMAS ad at the top of this page!!

Anyway, I let the peppers get frosted, and forgot about the basil, so that got zapped, too. I pulled up a lot of stuff today & started scooping on the cow manure my dear, dear neighbor brought over for me. As much as I dread winter, there's something nice about wrapping things up for the season.

This is what I picked today. In the colander is spinach, oregano & parsley.

We had our first frost here last night ,also. Our friends about 50 miles from here had light frost a few weeks back. Now maybe the trees will finally turn color for us. they looked like they were starting this afternoon, we have had a few trees-hickory etc, turn early, now we should get our color show!!

On a related note, I find it very disconcerting that there is a truecredit ad with someone's feet on the bathroom scale at the top of this page: "Are your numbers going up??"

Oh Golly, I gained 20 pounds last winter and just now got shed of 15 . . . Now what?

Fall color? For the most part, the trees around here didn't have a chance to change color - the leaves are just dead. After a run of light frosts and then the plunge down, all the way into the teens, some trees are covered with green dead leaves! Others seemed to drop their leaves overnight . . .

Sadly I think you are right, we have a few trees with awesome orange and gorgeous gold, but most are just brown after today...maybe next year!
