We're expecting our first frost tonight!

I am so not ready and not looking forward to it. Gotta watch my carrots, cabbage and broccoli.
Okay... I just planted broccoli and carrots for the first time ever this year. I thought they were winter veggies. Frost will kill them?

For several things, light frost is not supposed to hurt them but heavy frost or freezing will. Different things have different tolerances. Since I consider it lucky when my weatherperson on TV gets within 5 degrees on a forecast, I usually cover almost everything when frost is predicted.

Sometimes I think someone forgot to tell certain crops that they can handle a light frost. But many of the cool weather crops will continue to grow and develop until it really turns cold, then they all seem to shut down. What actually happens in your area will vary from year to year and will probably be different from my experiences. Last year I left my fall carrots in the ground during the entire winter. They stopped growing and I mulched them to help protect them, but they stayed sweet until they started to grow again in the spring.
