Two grasses growing near my mailbox. I tried to search for them in the VA weed/grasses websites, but none of them fit the yellow plant. I'm hoping the grains are edible. Yellow one has seeds very similar to oats.

Top one resembles a bearded wheat.

Bottom one, fescue?

Top is some kind of grain, probably wheat like seedcorn said. Bottom one, we have it around here, I just call it wild oats, probably not what it is though. It is a cool weather grass, at least here it is, dies back in heat of summer. Harvest the wheat, put it in a pillowcase, stomp on it to separate the grains.

What Bay said. Bottom one looks like Wild Oats. In the valleys around here, up to the lower hillsides, it is one of the major parts of the grassy flora. Ole timers used to mow and row and bale it. (Ole Mr. Acquistapace for instance, a neighbor when I was a kid. My garden was in one of his fields behind our back yard. He'd tell me to make my garden bigger cuz he'd have less to mow that way, lol!)

Top one does look like Wheat as SeedCorn said. Not one of the modern Wheats with shorter beards. You may have some accidentally crossed Wheat. Wheats sure are pretty! Let us know how you harvest the seeds!

Very cute little GCC you have there. I have one too, a pineapple. My avatar pic is her. I had some of those oats pop up from oats I bought from the pet store for her. She loves the oats, I wait for them to dry out then give her a bunch of them clipped to her cage for her to demolish. She loves the wheat too, but I haven't had any grow yet. Maybe I should let some of the wheat from the straw I get grow and give her the wheat heads.
