What are You Eating from the Garden?

I made a cherry pie from frozen cherries from 2024 harvest.
We are talking about Seriously making cherry wine bc I have SO MUCH in quarts canned in my pantry.
I have been told that Illinois wine is notoriously sweet, but the cherries seem to have soured some in storage, so I am thinking that they might ferment drier.

Oh yummy! I have made Chardonnay, Pinot noir, merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but never cherry wine. That sounds so good! I have also made blackberry mead and various recipes of hard cider.

There were big jars of raspberries and blueberries tucked in the back of the freezer, so yesterday I pulled them out and made a yummy fruit crisp for dessert. It was delicious with vanilla ice cream.

Rutabaga salt-brine. The 1st homemade 'kimchi' I've tried. Pretty good. Next time, will try thinner slices.

I suppose that some mustard greens from the narrow south bed of the greenhouse doesn't count for much.

Still, those plants have shown that greens started beneath the towering pepper plants in early Fall can do okay in an unheated Winter greenhouse.

I couldn't bring myself to pull the overstory while the peppers were still ripening fruit after repeated killing frosts outdoors. The greens had to live during their earliest weeks in rather compete shade as the hours of daylight grew shorter and shorter. Still, they had a start, gained some size during a mild Winter, and the few remaining began to bolt during the sunny days last week. They were tender and not bitter throughout.

Yes, I have grown more greens in the larger bed in the middle of the greenhouse but had to carry out the very heavy bench to do that. Also, I felt it necessary to put up plastic film over pvc hoops for protection during the coldest weeks. Mustard isn't Pak Choi and is especially hardy. Once the 2024 pepper plants were gone, they were covered with nothing extra.

My mom had a huge garden back when my kids were little and she grew several rows of raspberries. When we went to visit her we would go out to the garden and pick them and make a cobbler with ice cream!
