The idea is to make some kind of "improvement" - or, what is considered an improvement - on the land. It is time-honored, especially in the West but dates back to the Norman Invasion of the British Isles and for the same reasons. Adverse possession sets in after awhile.

Detlor? Well, I'd bet he wouldn't be able to help me with crossing heirloom tomato plants next season.

What might be of help is to finally stop trying to grow cabbage. The untouchable aphids that get in those plants are torment!! Trying to start early cabbage very late failed miserably. They don't want to grow in the heat of summer, aphids or not. I don't know . . . the savoy is awfully nice to have around. Maybe some kind of explosive device to kill the aphids . . . huh?

It would have helped to NOT have lost the Carmen Sweet Pepper plant tag in the garden. Near the end of the season, I realized which plants might be Carmen but, instead of waiting to see if this early ripening pepper would have had time to produce red-ripe fruit, I'd picked them green with the other Italian Sweets!! Try again? I think I've got more seed . . ?

I am hysterical with laughter over the mental image of exploded aphids and cabbage hurtling through the air over the garden!

Figure out some other support for my pole beans. The tee-pee thing is not working too well; catches the wind)
I don't use a tee-pee, but I made several three legged trellises. Like your tee-pee system, the wind was blowing mine over . . . until I connected them together with long 2x2's. Never another problem.

changes to the garden... wow... lets see.....

We have chickens and ducks now, so, more of that in the compost! We've got some (super duper way way way) late crops in now. Today we're installing some PVC pipes so we can make the "greenhouse covers" (what my hubby calls them). We planted winter rye as a crop cover in the other 4 beds. We worked up the corn section, and in the spring we will work in ALL the compost that we've been composting for the last year and a half. (there's some really good stuff in there!!) Or maybe we should work it in this fall??

Next year we want to put in a fence and a arbor. This winter I'm going to build a couple of lights so we don't have the leggy plants like we did last year. We bought two 72 cell self watering seed starting flats, so hopefully we can get a nice jump on starting seeds this next year! I want to grow some spinach, but since I will only eat it fresh, there isn't much use of me planting a lot. I've got to figure out a crop rotation for everything except the corn... that's the only one that gets planted in the same spot, but we always add lots of compost.

One major change that we are making next year is that EVERYONE in the family has to help, that way I don't become overwhelmed and it gets us ready for when we move to our farm. Besides, it's a nice thing to do as a family. :)

I will have to post some pictures of everything when we get it done today. :)

So here are some photos of my new daylily beds. We are going to plant winter wheat if we don't run out of time. This one is a right triangle shape around 96X32 feet.

Cat, this sound kind of weird, but can you post a picture of those beds. I would love to see them even if they're empty. :) They sound beautiful!

Cat, your going to have hundreds of daylillies! It's going to look like a public daylily park! You are so lucky to have so much space. I know it's going to look amazing. :)

I already have thousands. I have been hybridizing for 15-20 years. I have enough space that I should not need any new beds for a couple of years. I am learning to be ruthless in what I keep and what I compost. That is very hard to throw away plants. That's for the encouragement!
