Hello :frow gang sounds as if all of you have been very buzy, productive, sprouting and maybe a tad bit over working your selves. But you certainly sound as if you are Loving it too :love

DH & I have been working hard trying to get ready for our Greenhouse opening day Saturday :woot
And I made a super big score Wendsday, Tuesday I picked Noah, our grandson up after 4:30 from their muscial play practus (sp?) (tired)
When I did I saw this huge pile of new lumbered palets and Big ones to boot :ep So I called the school and asked what was going to happen to them, and if I could have them? They called me back and said they were mine for the taking. :ya So Dh Went right away and picked all 7 of them up. So today (Thursday) we buildt an instant fence and have used the rest for display racks for the plants for sale :celebrate That just made my day :ya There is no better Price than FREE :woot I will take some photos and post them

Well all I need to get some sleep have a very heavy work days ahead for the next few Will check in if I can

I am achy from yesterday! I dug up another 4 x 12 foot bed, a smaller 4 x 6 foot bed, and 6 squash hills.

But today I can actually get to that planting! Finally. I still have two more beds to dig, but I am going to wait untill I have these planted... give my poor arms a break from hoeing up those clayey clumps! :tools

COgirl, I actually do the opposite. :) I am trying to get outside as early as possible, and then come in and do my housework while it is hottest out, then go back out in the evening. But I am normally so tired that I just come in and sit with a big glass of water! :lol:

But I am still hoping to have most of the heavy work done this week, and then I will have time to catch up. :weight

I am starting two lots of veggie varieties that I have never grown before -- scorzonera and salsify ! Both are root vegetables -- I have eaten salsify (in Italy -- delicious) but not scorzonera; well not to my Knowledge !!! I do make a point, when travelling, to try any new things that appear on menus or are recommended by friends.

Has anyone grown them & have you got any growing tips? As they are longish roots & the seeds don't stay viable for long I had intended to apply the same principles as for parsnips? Whatcha think? :hu

I was so tired yesterday I could barely think :old :drool :th I wrote a long explanation about what i had done in the garden all day and WHOOPS...........!!! I lost the lot & OFF it shot, into the ether......NEVER TO BE HEARD OF or SEEN AGAIN...... :he So I went to bed before something worse happened.

I was potting up my tomatoes, they all have their first pair of proper leaves. I managed to do 50 pots. GOOD NEWS; I do have "BRANDYWINES" :ya I must have put the extra seeds into another tray just to use up the spare modules; there was a row of them in a tray of peppers. So the extra heat I gave the peppers must have nudged them into life -- interesting :clap I'M SO HAPPY :rainbow-sun

The weather is supposed to be good today, the wind eased yesterday. thank goodness -- it was driving me crazy.

My broody Dorking hen, "Julia" is still taking her responsibilities seriously & calmly accepted being moved to the old rabbit hutch I keep for this purpose. :love

Now I must have more coffee & start my day. Bye for now, :frow

I planted something called Parsley Root this season, it's supposed to be like a parsnip root with an herbal flavor, and the greens can be used as parsley, I'm really interested in how this will taste!

I've always wanted to try salsify, I'll have to put it on the list for next year.

I wasnt able to get anything in today. :rolleyes: All three kiddos got shots today, and the baby is teething... so I may be able to do a bit after DH gets home. I will be happy if all I get done is the kitchen cleaned and supper on the table! :barnie

Yes, I have! I first came across it in Holland when I was working there in the late 1960's -- before I had a garden. In the 70's I got my first house, with a small garden. I started growing it there. It was a typical small London minute square patch, walled-in by other houses -- my obsession started there.....!

I think we call it Hamburg Parsley. You eat both the root & the top leaves. They taste stronger than other parsley & the root tastes like parsnip (almost).

Now, have you tried growing Parcel; across between parsley & celery? I like that too but then I love celery -- so many people HATE it!

I also grow Cardoons & adore those! Both for their stunning size & structure (taller & broader than artichokes), their beautiful, subtle grey/green velvet leaves and their beautiful taste. It is almost never eaten here in the UK now -- GREAT SHAME but it is a very long-winded operation. Typically the Italians still grow it to eat & that is where you can try it, usually at the end of winter or the spring; you have to blanch the new growth by wrapping it up. I have done it a few times & loved it. But I grow it because any blue flower looks stunning near it. I even painted my barn blue because the clump of them are nearby & the combination gladdens my heart, even on the dullest, most miserable day!

Sorry that you can't watch the Elizabethan Garden programme in the US! Perhaps they will show it eventually?

Hope you are having decent weather over there. Our terrible winds have come back again today. I had to go round again this evening & batten down the hatches. My chickens hate being blown about & get very grumpy!!

I found the seed package - it was called Fakir Root in the description. I'll be interested in how it tastes, can't wait!

Yes, I have grown Parcel, it was good, but I grow Lovage, so it was kind of redundant. I love Lovage as an herb plant, it's grand, and as an herb to snip to put into my potato salad - I do love celery, both the taste and the crunch of the real thing in salad. I've never grown it, someday I will.

I'd love to try Cardoon too, someday, I've never eaten it but I do love huge, architectural plants.

Actually the weather got hot but calmed down, it's been rainy but the sun was out wonderfully over the weekend and today. Tomorrow we're being warned about thunderstorms with hail, we'll see how that goes :rolleyes: :)

I agree about the architectural splendour of lovage. I wouldn't be without my couple of plants but although I put the odd very young leaf in soup, stews etc. or the tiny, tiniest youngest leaf in a salad I don't go overboard about the taste of it . But then I love the purity of the taste of newly cut celery, chicory & endive. To me the leaves of lovage have the taste of corruption to them. Probably my elderly taste-buds....!!! Thank goodness we are all different & like to cultivate something different; I love that difference.

We are going to get some rain in the next few days -- well so THEY say....!! The garden certainly needs it. I can't remember it cracking up like it is, so early in the year. I'm very concerned about it as we are promised / threatened with a very hot summer.....Hmmm! I've been thinking hard about it & I'm planning to mulch with just about everything & anything I have to hand (but it has to be free as I am on an economic drive at the moment, forced by the economic crisis). Sorry I'm ranting a bit; I'll stop now!

At long last I have solved one of my minor problems re explaining things hoticultural on this site -- I have now discovered what climate/temperature zone I'm in, here in Oxfordshire, UK.

Apparantly it's Zone 8. :celebrate There now, you have something to relate to. :D I can't tell you how long I have been trying to find this out! But being a tech. beginner in the world of computer know-how I was LOST! Of course I found out by chance! :idunno but :ya

Today I'm back working in the garden; lots of watering early this morning. It is incredibly dry, sunny & windy again today & everything outside is in danger from by being zapped by one of these ( or,very probably, all 3).

I have just come in to fetch a cup uf coffee but got waylaid by adding to the list of my garden plants I'm trying to compile on my laptop. Then I could not resist a quick visit to TEG -- Hmmm -- an hour later, I'm still here :he when I should be outside planting the bare rooted Tree-peony that arrived yesterday. :D I put it straight into water last night. I've planned it's new home, within sight of the other one I have. I have a soft spot for them & the new one was my New Years' present to myself.....!!

I have to pot on my peppers which are now doing very well --I'm going to grow these in pots as I'm sure I will have to move them indoor in the fall. Last year I was still ripening one at Christmas.

Right! I MUST GET GOING again. :weee
