Just sowed my pansy seed outside. Should come up about the same time as the plants get in to the Nurseries.

I just bought a couple of Johnafree (disease resistant Johnathon) apple trees. They should ship next week. VERY excited!! I ordered Semi-Dwarf bare rooted. They were developed just down the road from me at the University of Illinois College of A.C.E.S. (the AG Dept.), so I think they will do very well at my house.

I went fruit crazy and have ordered a plum tree, 3 blackberries, 3 blueberries, 3 currants, 2 gooseberry, and a cherry tree. All will be going into very large pots so I don’t have to dig them up when I move. I’m excited, but also a bit nervous. We’ll see how it goes!

Sounds exciting! I keep my blueberries in half barrels (10 of them) and they do really well. It actually works better for me than when they were in the ground. They are much healthier and productive now, but that could be management versus a soil issue..

That’s the great thing about pots...the only soil is what you put there. Not so much amending as building anew.

Blueberries are the oddest thing...we had 2 huge trees growing up (over 7’) that were big producers. Come time to move houses my father lost a bumper off his truck trying to pull up those stubborn bushes he couldn’t dig out. Fast forward to the last few weeks when I read how shallow blueberry roots are and I just can’t believe it. I suppose it depends on the case, but I aim to take these with me.

I guess a half-barrel is 25.25 gal? I got 3 big pots (maybe 20-25 Gal) and 6 small pots (closer to 15 gallon). Not sure what’s going where just yet.

I might suggest that you go back and order a 2nd cherry tree. I put in two Montmorency cherries, planted them 20 ft apart and they now cross pollinate. I have yet to get the crew to pick all of the fruit in June! Good luck with all of your fruits!

Today was all garden prep. I started in on one of the two beds in the front yard since the snow was off of them. They’re covered in big 3” rock and I thought no problem to remove all the rocks and clean up the soil in a day. So wrong was I. After 5 hours on hand and knee I’d cleared less than a 5’ length (about a quarter of one bed). The rock is about 4” deep, and the bed is completely full of some kind of bulb. There’s also a half destroyed layer of garden plastic in there. Such a mess: I was pulling rocks, dead leaves and grass, and digging massive bulb systems up in addition to a lot of trash.


On the bright side I met a grasshopper, a good deal of worms, discovered the soil to be of good texture and quality, 3 spiders and I kept our distance, I saw some very fancy beetles that were all chromatic-colored, and got a heckin’ good bit of exercise. I’ll be back out tomorrow, body depending. There’s no way I can work on installing my veggie beds as most the lawn is still under water, so I’ll work on the flower beds in the meantime.

Wow! What a mess! DD's property has some mess on their property from the previous owner but not as bad as yours. I agree, trash them.
