Yesterday, I pruned the front yard clematis vine. The rambling rose also had another pruning; maybe, I am finished with it but it has to be out of the way of a paint job on that backyard gate. The gate has some problems on the non-rose side. A long horizontal and a short vertical board should be replaced because they are attached to the hinge and gate post. Years of life would be gained by replacing the entire gate but I just can't see the need to do that when there is nothing structurally wrong with the other parts of the gate. The climbing rose could certainly put itself in the way as it takes off for the overhead trellis that covers about 18 feet. So, time will be of the essence in completing in proper painting weather.
Today's weather was good enough for me to make a start cultivating under what will soon be the temporary hoop house. The simple board walls of the excavated path are needing to be replaced. After removing a fence about a dozen years ago, I used some 1x4 cedar fence board to provide something of a retaining wall for the 2 beds that are covered by the hoop house. The bottom boards have decayed. I replaced the ones on the northside of the path a couple of years ago and now it's time to do the southside.
Cultivating the south bed with the spading fork, after all the years of burying compostables, was easy-peasy. Of course, I am out of shape from the months of Winter inactivity. Twenty foot beds and in the way of the new wall were 3 kale plants that hopefully survived a move across the yard. The soil is wet and the top inch was frozen until about 11AM. The nearest foot of soil to that retaining wall had to be moved to about a 16" depth. I lasted a little over an hour and probably need another hour –– depending on how long it takes me to find and cut the old 2x4's to replace those thin 1x4's. It will have to wait until Sunday, I am guessing. Rain, snow and wind storms are moving in tonight and will be around for awhile.
Steve, a little tired but it was good exercise for this olde gardener
