What did You do "To Grow?"

Most of the bok choy is in the beds in the hoop house. Some was moved out into the little veggie garden.

It's fairly sheltered there but the timing turned out to be good -- Just before the last rain. I hope it didn't have frost this morning but there is frost here at home this morning.

I have had bok choy bolt because of hard frost, as soon as it did warm up. There are lots more plants in the hoop house.

No frost for several days and the weather service had predicted the warmest overnight temperatures of the year but there is a little too much mixing with 20mph wind.

I left frost tender plants in the shed-attached hoop house last night with a heater and fan. It was 53° in there, a little cooler than I'd hoped but I've kicked up the thermostat, 2hrs before sunrise ... Hey! We now have 14hrs of sunlight here at 48°North!

Two days ago, the property owner and I got the water turned on and some irrigation pipes laid out for the big veggie garden. The onion seedlings needed it. Yesterday, I hooked up water at the little veggie garden. It wasn't too simple there. Had to change location of my hose bibs and buy a 100ft 3/4" hose to reach the stand pipe dragging the hose through bushes to get there. The property owner wasn't around so I hope I have it in an okay place. I had one of the homemade sprinkler stands that I'd broken to work with and just cobbled it together with fittings for the hose bibs:

A post and a couple wraps of baling wire and I was in the irrigation business .

This morning and every morning over ... several days,

I've been up every 2 hours from 2am on,

to check on the temperature of the hoop house with its tomato plants. Getting the space heater and fan set right ... Hopefully, I will not feel the need to continue this, at least, every night. Olde age helps. You know how us oldsters sleep. And, one does learn the drill after a few years.

amazing how well bok choi handles freezing temperatures, personally i think it improves the flavor of ihem.....

The other hoop house has the Asian greens.

They are just so tender and nice .

It has frozen several times in there since that seed was sown in early March. If I have to move frost-tender plants in that hoop house also, they will have it quite a bit warmer than freezing from there on out. But, that will come with more fiddling with space heaters and fans .

I've been "growing" both new neighbors perennial beds. Young families with a lot of enthusiasm for beautifying their properties. It's been fun digging through my perennial beds and sharing some favorites with them.

Seedlings have been planted (in between our big rains that we ARE NOT complaining about), and the chicks have finally feathered out and been moved outside to a transition coop. This means I now have a dining table again! My husband will be so excited to not have to eat dinner at the bar anymore.

I bought some of that composted chicken manure, I was telling @MoonShadows about. The 3-2-2 stuff ...

Got it out to the big veggie garden and used it for the kale, beets and, even, the peas. A timely rain washed it in but I did get most all of it covered with soil, first.

The bag directions are to start with 25# / 200sqft, till, sow, then apply over the planting. I didn't get any fertilizing done on those beds before the tractor guy got to 'em. However, I've been applying organic fertilizers there for nearly 10 years. For the most part, that has been the "whole bird" products, not just manure. I believe the residual feather and bone meal is, at least, somewhere available through the year.

Steve...What's your official last frost date up there on the border? Ours is officially Memorial Day, but we all cheat and keep an eye out for frost in case we need to cover things up.

Not nearly that late, @MoonShadows . Officially, the frost-freeze season has arrived. However, a Pacific Northwest spring with its slow warm-up has to be expected.

The average overnight temperatures this month is in the low 40's. June morning average is officially right at 50°f. So, we are getting there!

This spring, there has been a lot more sunshine but we are getting some much-needed rain right now .
