I am posting this on behalf of my mother-in-law. She asked me to ask you guys if you had any ideas for what could go in here:

It gets 6-8 hours of full sun in the morning.

Sounds like a perfect spot for a Dwarf acer palmatum. There are many to choose from some variegated . They have interest thruout the 4 seasons. Hardy from zone 5. Of course any ground cover of your choice can be planted under the dwarf tree. Both trees in pics showing autumn color.

A little late, BUT, nasturiums fill in nicely, you can save the seeds and they die back and fertilize for the next season. I just saw your thread. I guess you could plant perennials, then fill in with annuals until the perennials spread and fill in.
What did you end up planting there?
