What in the name of all that is holy is wrong with my corn?!?!

I found a tassel infected with it. I cut it out.

OMGOSH! I've seen this happen before, but I thought it was an alien attack.

Tried to grow white corn a couple times, but always the ears get smut... the cc extension told me that the fungus lives in the soil for years...

Just another one of those crops cheaper to let someone else grow....
