Nobody reads anything I wriiiittee!

Carol Dee, go to www.johnnyseeds.com and into the search box type - pelleted carrot

or, pelleted parsnip

I suppose.

Steve
years past always planted seed only, last year after building the beds ordered pelleted carrots 99% germination rate, have not found anyone who sells pelleted parsnip yet.
parsnips are a very finicky seed to sow out of 50 seeds got 3, this year going to sow as directed cover with some plastic to keep the seeds moist during germination..it's going to be a experiment
the pelletized veggies have a coating of clay which helps hold in the moisture....

When I worked at the greenhouse/nursery in Montana I resorted to feeding overripe cherries, crabapples, grapes, Currants, and other things such as these to the wild raccoons that almost always pooped at a particular poplar tree. Come spring I'd splash water on the poop. Sure enough, things would sprout and grow.

Yep. The GROADY BLEEYECH METHOD, but it worked.

Haven't tried parsnips, but my success rate for carrots isn't all that bad. I sow carrots in blocks rather than rows. After working and raking the soil, I scatter the carrot seeds and cover lightly with my hand over the planted area. Then I put a layer of landscape fabric held about 3 inches off the soil by bricks or wood. It is important to keep that area moist and shaded, but the landscape material does that. Rain can filter through the fabric (not plastic) and there is little wind that gets below the material to dry the soil.

Once the carrots have sprouted, you can remove the fabric and grow as usual. This year I do plan to make some seed tapes with flour paste and newspaper so my spacing is better. Oh, yes, and carrots need to be planted early in the spring as they are cool weather growers.

I read EVERYTHING and would have answered sooner, but had a few things to do other than play on the computer.
