I was weeding and found these...What are they? As you can see they aren't "in" the ground but they were.

No idea. Is anything still alive in that? Are those brown things plant or insect? Maybe the white is a coating around some eggs and the brown things were pupa used as a food source when the eggs hatched. Or are the brown things the eggs and the white mass the food source? Whatever it is, that is weird.

Looks like Cancer Root (Conopholis americana). I always see a few when I'm out mushroom hunting, in the spring particularly, although I've never dug one up. It's a parasitic plant. Doesn't do much more than look like a funny pine cone-like thing sticking out of the soil.

I guess you could say it cocooned from the ground because it came out of a shell in the ground by itself. The brown things are part of the plant :)
