Thank you Seed. I did a little reading on CMV and although it's not a perfect fit it does seem to fall in with the situation here. It has a huge number of hosts including weeds and native plants, and is vectored by aphids.
Since this was just a brushy weedy space previously it seems likely that it could have been around and even in the roots that got tilled under.

I need to do some looking into it and get more familiar with it, but is this something that can be minimized by clean cultivation this year?

Oh, I forgot, the raspberries are perennials...does that make them carriers?

Strong possibility. She may have brought problems home. Watch and see which tomato varieties are worse. I'd go with a healthy hybrids next year. FWIW

They did bring in some composted horse manure from a stable down the road.
No mention of the spraying of dandelions in the horse pasture?

"Persistent" herbicide in the manure ... where did that manure go in her garden?

The manure and stall bedding got tilled into the whole space.

What puzzles me is how unaffected the squash are. I believe they are susceptible.

I'll check with the other neighbors, where the raspberries came from and see if they have anything going on with theirs.
