What kind of lilac tree is it?

We recently had landscapers plant a lilac tree in our front yard to replace the old tall one that was causing root damage to the house. I am worried that the one we got is a dwarf tree, not a regular one that will grow 15' and higher.

The one we got has small leaves and while the landscaper told me that it had already bloomed before we got it, we had a random bloom about two weeks ago (mid June) that was very tiny and very short lived. We measured our tree and it is right now 7' tall.

Oh, and I have emailed the landscaper and haven't heard from him yet...

I'd never heard of lilac trees, just lilac bushes. I'm very familiar with those. But a lilac that can grow 30 feet high. Interesting.

I don't have any suggestions or advice, just a thank you for the post. I learned something.

There is a so called chinese lilac, I believe it is S. reticulata, that is pretty much a legitimate tree... it flowers later than normal lilacs and has white (never any other color) flowers that smell, um, very un-lilac-y... to me they smell *nasty*.

Otherwise, there is no lilac "tree" as such, just varieties (mainly the less-fancy cultivars, and the wild-type things often labelled just 'common lilac') that can get 15-20' tall if left to their own devices.

All of the taller-growing normal lilacs I've known have had the same sort of typical lilac leaves... if yours are really *small* leaves, like maybe barely more than 1" wide and not really heart-shaped, then the only ones I know with those SMALL leaves are the dwarf types (Palibin, Miss Kim, littleleaf lilac, dwarf korean lilac) which indeed don't grow much more than 5-7' tall even if infinitely neglected.

But if yours is a small plant and has normal heart-shaped common-lilac type leaves, and they are like 2" or more in width just not AS wide as the thing you had taken down, then my guess is that it's probably what you wanted, just younger or a different cultivar than the one you used to have.

If you go post "hey good job beautiful flower" etc type replies to other peoples' threads, or actually reply to them with info, then you can very quickly get to being able to post pics, and we can probably say more definitely

Hmmm I do not know what kind of a tree it is, but will *go out on a branch* and say that IS NOT A lilac!

Actually, I am pretty sure it is. If you look at the second picture I posted, you'll see the pinkish tiny blooms and when they opened up, they looked like lilac blooms and smelled oh so good... I am just afraid that it is a littleleaf lilac because of the size of the leaves, 1" or less, the fact that it rebloomed in the same year, and just my gut feeling...
