i've been searching online to get an idea of what red and yellow raspberry varieties will do ok in my area. the problem i have with doing armchair research is that i can't get an idea of how they taste or how others think they taste.

i've read that Caroline and Boyne will do ok here in NH in my zone 5 area. and Fall Gold for a yellow is supposed to do well and have a good taste. but i've also been looking at Tulameen and Saanich (thornless red type?) and Cascade Gold. i'm hoping someone would tell me how well they do or taste.

are there any types out there that you think taste bland, bitter, sweet or just wonderful? of course it could all depend on the area it is grown in.

Sorry I can't be of much help. I've grown a bland, tasteless variety of red raspberry, but I don't remember the name. It's history now anyway. I do heartily recommend Fall Gold. It is pure ambrosia on the tongue, and for me had a small early fruiting as well as the large late one.

This is one berry you won't see except in Farmers' Markets as it doesn't travel well. Indeed, mine seldom make the trip into the house without a significant reduction in volume. Yum!

My problem was that the picnic bugs(?) liked them as much as I did and I had to fight for every late berry.

I just picked a couple Fall Gold berries. They were sweet and good. I'm not good at describing flavor. The color is sooo pretty though. If I were you, I would defintely try them.

I have fall Gold and a red raspberry that was given to me by an old gardener several years ago. The Fall Gold is wonderful, the red one is also delicious, but since I don't know what it is, that won't help you.

That is two more recommendations for Fall Gold. Can you see where this is going, Chickie'smom?

If it were up to me, I'd be getting a few of each gold variety. Ya'll can never have too many raspberries.

And another Fall Gold Vote. My husbands Grandma had them. They produced well for all the years she lived in her home. But when she was moved to assisted living we had no place for them so neglected to transplant any. Sure wish we had. DH planted 2 varieties of red last summer. (Can not remember names right off.) They are back so hopefully we will have some to enjoy this year.

Coming from an ole time goodies lover, FALL GOLD IS SCRUMPTIDDILISHIOUSLYUMPTIOUS!

They don't spread as much as some others, but they do some. So, get plenty of them, and encourage some of them to spread.

Figuring out the JUST RIGHT moment of picking doesn't take long. I like when they get that slightest blush of something akin to red or pink.

Course, like a kid in a candy store, I REALLY REALLY like the Loganberries too. I understand there is a strain of Loganberry that grows upright. Not sure their hardy zones though.

Well, I am happy to hear this. I planted 10 Fall Gold that will produce this year. I have red ones that are really good, but I do not know the name of them. They get really tall. I have another red that I bought and was told they were yellow, but turned out red. The shape of the berry is different from my other red ones and they do not get as tall. They have a shape like picture here. I thought they were deformed.

I started several red varieties a number of years ago. Had a difficult time getting them established and in the end only Caroline came through (and has spread to a good-sized patch). Nice yields, excellent flavor when I can manage to get some - despite netting, the birds and chipmunks (who run under the netting and climb up, breaking the stems) seem to enjoy them more.:barnie

I've heard that birds don't bother Fall Gold as much as the reds - as discerning consumers, they keep "waiting" for them to ripen. Do any of you that have grown that variety felt there is some truth to that?

It is true that the birds didn't bother my fall gold berries. Unfortunately, the fact that they produced later meant there were more insects that did. It was a fight either way.

And, I never thought of birds as 'discerning consumers'. It seems they take the first bite of a cherry or berry whether it is fully ripe or not.
