Ducks is right. The feed store in Ukiah has lots of different kinds of "hay bales" and what is commonly called "hay" is often really straw. The regulars there and the employees there know exactly the differences. They are also pleased to explain it too. They have Rice Straw, Oat Straw, Guaranteed weed free stuff, and they will tell you if that really means no seeds or no weeds.

They are eating hay that has not been sprayed. The hay is not smelling bad because they have litter boxes with pine kiln dried wood shavings used for horse bedding and I scoop the wet out daily and put in new shavings. They are doing a good job of using the litter box for urinating. The hay is in a different part of the hutch and just gets poop in it and they chew it up and stomp it to pieces. Next winter I want to do something different, but anyway, I have a compost bin getting hot.
