The first paste tomato I grew was a mistake. I had thought that it was a "saladette" plum and like Lunch Box, which I had failed to order that year. It was Viva Italia - a quite different hybrid from Lunch Box.

Viva Italia isn't sweet. No, it isn't acidic, either.

@so lucky , do you want a paste or something else? I didn't find Gardener's Delight very sweet. What it has going for it is lots of flavor for a non-hybrid cherry. Bloody Butcher is like that but it's bigger than a cherry. Lots of flavor.

DW will use Sungold sometimes for her fresh salsa. That's okay. Something I liked about Heinz 2653 Paste was that it had lots of flavor and it was sweet so ... I could enjoy it fresh. Even so, it made just about the best cooking tomato I've ever grown. However, it's "early maturing" listing didn't mean much. I'm not sure if it had 10 day period of ripeness. That's okay because it is, after all, a determinate variety. However, the frost we had that year came late otherwise, those tomatoes would have all been picked green to ripen indoors.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't want a sweet tomato. Anyone know which cherry tomatoes aren't sweet? I liked the flavor of yellow pear, but they split too badly in my climate.
You might try some of the "black" tomatoes. Those I have tried had strong, complex flavors, with relatively little sweetness. Really good for sauces & cooking, but IMO not well suited to eating fresh.

The grape tomato that I grow, "Elfin", is not as sweet as many cherry types, more like a mini-Roma... meaty, without a mouthful of seeds.

I just put Heinz 2653 in a shopping cart at Territorial. You made it sound good.
