Artichoke is a beautiful plant even if you don't eat the buds. I have grown them as an annual in my zone 5. You can grow them as a perennial though they are a big plant and it sounds like you are looking for small. Perhaps artichoke in the back and shorter things in front. I see no problem with onions and strawberries. I grow strawberries and they are miserable to keep weeded. What about chives? They are so pretty in spring with their purple seed heads. I love growing them because they are the first homegrown "live" food that I get in the spring. There are everbearing strawberries though they don't give you the big crop the way most strawberries do.
