On a forum for watergardening a new member made generous offer. Free plants for postage. I was suppose to get some plants for $5. just got email postage is $35. Her thread on foru was locked and she was warned about posting this. Being use to honest member here, I question if this is a mistake or scam here is email she sent.

Just got back from the post office. I sure made a major goof when I told you $5.00 and it is my fault because of the size of the package which needed to be large because of the leaves. Regular mail cost more than priority so I did sent it priority and you should have it by Saturday. Because of my mistake, if you want to send me something toward it, that is your choice but I do not expect you to send me the balance of the postage because of my error. It came to $35.65 (I'll send you a copy of the receipt if you wish). Just please let me know when they arrive. And enjoy them.

If you still want the plants, and they actually come, I would ask for a copy of the receipt. If it looks legit, pay the postage and chalk it up to bad luck. Don't send a personal check with your info on it, though.

It sounds like an honest mistake and she has released you from any obligation to recompense her for her mistake, so it doesn't sound like a scam. Ask her to send the receipt for it so you can be sure, if you feel bad about the discrepancy , then do as you feel led to do in repaying her for postage.

When I send someone seeds or such like, I don't even ask them to repay the postage...a gift is a gift, even if they are a complete stranger to me. Not too long ago I offered to send folks pumpkin seeds and the person who accepted it was from Ireland...little did I know it would cost over $13 to send 30 seeds there. I learned a lesson there and I didn't mind paying that money to learn it, but if she asked for more of them right now, I'd do it all over again because it's just a nice thing to do.

She claims to have study under all these master gardener. I dont know why she did not trim back leaves before packing.
Some people can study forever and learn little. I'm not sure shipping plants is part of the master gardener course anyway and not everyone would think to trim leaves if it is a plant you could trim. To me it sounds like an honest mistake.

The mistake was mailing it without discussing it with you after she found out the difference in cost. I don't know how far she lives from the post office or how inconvenient it would be to wait and try again. A delay in shipping might harm the plant. it sounds like she was willing to eat the cost difference just to follow up on what she said she'd do. Instead of asking for a receipt you might look on the package and see if you can see the cost of postage stamped on it, then do as your conscious requires. She let you off the hook if you want off.
