Pour some Bt or Rotenone into the hole. Put soil over the stem if it is a vine-it will make more roots and perhaps save the plant.

I have also read that you can find the hole and dig the critter out with a knife. I have had some success with all of the methods. It depends on how much damage to the vine they have already done. Good luck. I also plant consecutively a few weeks apart. I think pest damage has a lot to do with the timing of when they arrive. I have found the most damage with early plantings. Chickens overwintering in the garden has cut down on most insect damage in my veggie garden.

Do I look for pests in dirt? or in lower vines?

If it is a vine borer you should see a hole in the vine with what I think is excrement spilling out.
