Thank you, Mary! That's the only photo of me to be found around here as I'm always the one behind the camera. My grandson, Maverick, shot me in the yard several years ago.

Awww, I love the barred rocks, one of the best breeds I've ever had the pleasure of owning. :)

@Smart Red, how old was Brownie? Sorry for your loss. Even when they die unexpectedly, we always wonder if we missed a warning sign, or worse, ignored a symptom.

Brownie was hatched in May of 2012 -- not that old. I did consider checking to see if I could tell what happened. Considered it and dropped the idea since neither of the grands wanted to know.

Was she a production, or sex link hen? Sadly the average age for really productive layers such as those are three years.

Sorry for no updates, my internet has been down all week, we have been going round and round w/ at&t.

I have 19 chicks healthy and happy. One very special chick, that took much special attention, he had a huge abd hernia and messed up legs and feet from an early forced hatch from the shrink wrapping. He is 6 days old today and all the leg braces are off have been for days, just a tiny bandage on what's left of the hernia, not much. These pics are of the crew at 3 days old, I don't have any older pics yet. The special chick will be instantly recognizable. He is completely normal for his genetics, you will understand that statement when you see.

Okay the special one didn't get loaded in this group so the next post will have the special chick in it.
