That kind of reminds me of what they say about Yixing clay teapots (the kind you are supposed to use to brew really fine teas Gonfu* style). Supposedly one of the reasons this is important is because they are porous enough to absorb the some of the tea (this is also why you're supposed to use a different one for every kind**) Supposedly, after enough time (and many of the famous pots have been in continuous use for several centuries) you are not supposed to even need tea leaves anymore, merely adding hot water to the pot will be sufficient to make the tea.

*This is actually the same word as kung-fu, just a different regional pronunciation. kung-fu merely means "preformed with skill or excellence". ANYTHING done with practice and attention to detail is considered kung-fu (the fighting style is actually called wushu.)

** Though since teas are supposed to change from year to year and season to season, and one is supposed to keep that in mind as well, I'm not sure how this fits with the whole "heirloom tea" thing.
