There are MANY ways to fix it. I have mine in a raised bed, and the soil sits about 4 inches below the rims, so I can mound a little higher than that. IF it isn't high enough I can always surround them with carboard and fill in the dirt. When I grew a big crop of potatoes 2 years ago I didn't mound much, but the potatoes still weren't green. I think a lot has to do with planting deep enough, to, even up to 5-6 inches below the soil to start. I have 21 IN the garden and one on my porch, started mid-February and will be harvested at the end of THIS month, in zone 6!! :ya

Hi all, This is my first post here and I am sure this has been covered many a time. But...this past weekend, we planted our garden. I set the potatoes and I know that we have to keep mounding them. (from memory as a child) However, I remember someone telling me to add more soil, compost, etc when there was a particular number of leaves showing. I can't for the life of me remember how many. Or is this just complete hogwash anyhow? :D Thanks so much for the anticipated information. Now if we can get the sun to come out we'll be in good shape!
I dig a deep trench and plant covering with just a few inches of soil. When the plants sprout I cover with one side of the mound by the trench. When they grow a bit more I cover with the other mound.
