I am setting up a small pond I have at White Plains house. It is preform 500 gallons with 2 shelfs for plants. I emptied it 2 years ago when something ate all my goldfish. I have a large natural pond at country house, I plan to bring down duckweed, cattails and flag iris. What plants do you grow that do well in water. This weekend Westchester co. is giving away free mosquito fish. Being much smaller then goldfish I am hoping predators will not notice them.

I like the idea of mosquitofish to help prevent the mosquito breeding. We only have some cattails in pots and a few water lilies (But not seeing them yet, they may not have survived the winter. Be careful of the duck weed. It reproduces fast and will cover the entire water surface. Then you can not see the fish.

We used to have two garden ponds but filled one in to cut down on maintenance, Our Koi pool,4 ft. deep is under a fibrerglas roof in my small garden room. It has two small shelves for plants which we don't use as the koi were always dumping them, other than that the sides are steep, no place for herons to sit in wait. Never had a problem with herons until last fall, one finally managed to find it's way in but didn't get any fish. I have a raised planter around mine with a spillway built in.
Hmmm, not letting me add pictures using the drag and drop feature right now which is so easy for this computer challenged old gal, I'll try later.

been working with ponds since 1996 when i put i the 1st one at my parents. they now have 3 with a total of around 350 gallons. they have a fenced in yard but occasionally have a few cat's that visit but not much bother the goldfish.

finally got around to putting in the 600 gallon pond here last summer & already have it up & running with the pump & just added 50 2.5" koi yesterday. this morning i moved my 3 8" koi out there too. deciding if i want to move my 2 flathead catfish out there but know once they go out i will not see them again-they want to hide from most anything except when food is involved.

i have a waterlily that is coming back, some sweet flag i need to pull back up to the shelf since i place all plants in the bottom to help winter them. i usually get water hyachinth & sometimes water lettuce. water celery is a nice addition & should be hardy for this area but i haven't been able to over-winter it. i've read that stuff is edible-haven't tried it yet. just ordered some lotus-about 6 plants since it is a good deal but i won't have the space for more than 2 in the pond. put in a bid for some Chameleon plants & looking for some others online. mys parents have the narrow leaf cattails & i've tried to take cuttings to get established here but last year they didn't seem to like the transplant. i'm still watching to see if they came back. i've had taro-elephant ear's & those got brought in for the winter. they were in the 55 gallon tanks with the koi & they kept getting knocked out of the pot. i have since lost the main plant but noticed a lot of tiny babies floating the the tank. plenty of duck weed is in the platy tank, so when the weather is past it's last frost most will be moved out. decided i had waaaay too much of the java moss so threw a big batch in the pond couple weeks ago & it's still in there. baby koi are enjoying that.

Just been fed, some of our koi got big so we gave them to someone with a bigger pond and replaced with smaller koi. When we filled in the other pond we moved the shubunkins in with the koi.

very pretty @aftermidnight!

i want to make a cover to go over my pond but since last year i brought the fish in for the season there wasn't anything that should have gotten to mine.

i need a 'bang head here' sign. since my local greenhouse has limited stock this time of year (2 types of plants). i went & ordered some stuff on ebay. got the water lettuce, pennywort, water celery, frogbit, water primrose, lizard tail & alligator weed (never had this before). well, some were a better deal than i could get locally & i can give my mom the extra's for her 3 ponds.
