My parents got a home movie camera when we where little. Most of family menories are on film. What a pain movie projector taken out, hopefully bulb not burned out, the screen set up, then hope tape doesn't break.

You can have them put on dvd's now NYboy, as I'm sure you already know. My dad had a box with grandpas movies in them. It was grandpa who had the movie camera, but on summer visits to stay with them it was my dad who usually manned the filming. When we went back to clean mom and dads house we only found three reels. I had them put on a dvd, not even knowing what they contained, and it turned out to be mostly us 4 oldest kids on camping trips and at the beach and playing in our grandparents yard. The film quality is terrible but the memories are priceless.

Fun to read.

I was curious how thinking about family heirlooms has changed in the US. The emphasis as I was growing up was "out with the old, in with the new!"

Google Ngram

If you look at the term in books from the second half of the 19th century, when family heirloom was seldom used, you see the references to what you might expect - jewelry, clothing, bibles. Just a quick look and count of the more recent literature shows that 3 out of 10 uses for the words has to do with plants.

I was just thinking that @Smiles Jr. has the farm he has many of his Dad's plants (heirlooms now!) I still have tomato seeds from some of Smiles heirloom varieties. Always sure to save some each year,
