@so lucky we can get Doc Martin on several channels up here, VISION, WTVS and KCTV, you might be able to find repeats in your TV lineup. I just ordered the 7th season from Amazon, as I said before I can watch this show over and over again. On a blustery winter day we sometimes have a Doc Martin marathon at our house.

I'm still trying to figure out casting to the teevee!
Thought I could watch it the next day ... nope. PBS is not 100% cooperative in program availability o_O. Pretty bad that I have already missed episodes this season but it's okay. DW had something else last night but I'll pick up the most recent aaattt ... 01/17/16, 6:00 pm!

Who do I identify with ... embarrassed to say - all of them, including Martin :hide.

Now, to show you how cooperative local PBS can be, I'll go to the PBS thread and link a Sweet Corn (!) video that won't even be broadcast on "Washington Grown" until later this month!

@digitS' I think there's a bit of Martin in all men, at least in the men I know, not divulging who in particular tho :).

I think you can catch some of the seasons and episodes of Doc Martin on line free if you hunt around a bit. DH is watching all the seasons of one of the Law and Order series on line free.

Watched a few seasons on the computer....as a nurse, I love the medical mysteries in each episode, but most of the characters are incredibly rude and mean spirited, and the children complete brats. A lot of the plots revolve around lies and miscommunications, as with most TV shows.

Addictive in some odd way, though. Maybe it's the few characters who are endearing and the medical plot twists.

Can't imagine why all these ladies are infatuated with the doctor, though...he's rude, insensitive, lacking in a sense of humor and the milk of human kindness, and downright homely.

Look, the only characters of a more normal personality are the women but how is that different than reality?

I checked, although it was with a measure of anxiety, Aunt Joan did not die, in real life. The actress probably decided to retire since she is in her 70's. Aunt Ruth provides a good replacement and balances Martin's character, grounds him as it were. He continually struggles with reality, after all. Hopelessly struggles ... yet, he isn't an idiot and now has the good sense to swallow his pride and seek professional help. He might even benefit from it but who knows? The mystery of his life isn't just that some people care about him but that he even survives!

Louisa is an absolute charm. She brings so much to any community or relationship but, yes, what does she see in Martin?! Caring for him is almost a tragedy but she also is no idiot and has great strength. I thought the episode about the little boy in her classroom was very revealing of her personality. He also was a hopeless misfit but didn't realize it. Louisa sincerely cares for the people around her.

Hopefully that quality of caring goes beyond just feeling sorry for the misfits. Aftermidnight has it right, you can see all men in Martin. From my perspective, I hardly have any understanding of why women put up with us! Please don't let it be that we are just such pathetic examples of humanity.

If you question the universal appeal of these characters, check out the Foreign Adaptations of this show! Somehow, it reassures me about humanity. Maybe all doors are not closed and there are more horizons, Portwenn broad.

You think those women are normal??? :th You must live up north a good ways where it's a little more comparative. Most of those women are rude, ignorant, neurotic and just plain mean. Very few of those characters I would class as "normal", but particularly not the women. There are more "normal" men on that show than women, from where I'm sitting.

@digitS', I think the reason they had Aunt Joan die was the actress herself wanted to leave the series as she likes to try different roles and not do one for too long a time. As to the doc himself, it's Martin Clunes I admire so much, how that man can stay in character is beyond me , I keep looking for a twinkle in his eye or a break in that stoic look of his, but haven't caught him out yet although sometimes when he's looking at Louisa a softness creeps into his eyes, absolutely a brilliant bit of acting in my books.
@Bekissed I can see your take on the series, being a nurse you have seen and had to deal with a lot of pain and anguish, you come across as a very caring and compassionate person so I can see why you might not care for this show. For me, I really look forward to the next episode. They only film every two years so it will be a long wait for the next series.

Doc Martin: Can you give me his phone number then, please?

Pauline: No. Don't have it.

Martin: Remind me what your job is again?

Pauline: He didn't leave a number. He left in a rush, looking like a frightened rabbit. Like all your patients, actually.

Don't get me wrong...I find the interchanges between the Doc's character and those he finds to be foolish to be entertaining and even worth a chuckle, as I often feel like saying similar things. Especially his interaction with Pauline and her cousin before her.

But, underneath the medical intrigue and the witty sarcasm, there lies a picture I get of a community that will turn on one another like wolves at the least provocation. The passel of teen girls that stroll through the various scenes all need a good switchin' on their bare legs, then dressed more like young ladies and taught respect for their elders...as do all the other children characters on the show.

Just a thread of nastiness and licentiousness beneath the humor of the situations that leaves a bad taste on the tongue of my conscience. Makes me wonder why I find the show entertaining when I really shouldn't.
