will stump roots mess up a garden

The only complaint we've had about the pine tree stumps in our yard are the huge empty voids they have left behind.

Of course, these were trees that were cut down decades ago, so you won't face this for a while yet. lol

But, the grass would grow over the top, leaving what looked like solid ground. Until you stepped on it a few times. A bit of digging revealed a hole literally as deep as our shovel handle underneath. I bet we've filled up half a dozen of these or more.

Just had a thought, we have some pine tree stumps that are probably 2-3 feet across and 20-30 years old that were just cut and left when house #3 was built... well, giant huckleberry bushes grow out of them! Maybe if you have "extra" stumps, you can drill out the center of one, let it rot out a bit, and grow some delicious huckleberries out of them!

We're dealing with the same, and its those nasty stumps that send up shoots!

I am going to try the drill idea this spring!

Other then that, I garden right around them. :happy_flower

Vfem, you could spray the new shoots as they come up with horticultural vinegar (or plain ol' household white vinegar, it's just a lower acidity). The roots are still alive and as long as they have energy will continue suckering. The vinegar will burn the leaves and eventually the roots will poop out and die.
