Can it be done? I am going to grow them in half wine barrels this year, hill them up with straw, and probably put hard plastic 'extentions' around the barrels so I can hill even higher than the barrel edge...'

BUT - Can I start them now? Can they be grown year-round in my Zone 9 area? Could I start them but then hothouse them with plastic?

AND - What about yams and sweet potatoes? Definitely plan on hothousing or cold framing, but is it even possible with them being more tropical plants?

Thank you in advance, this is my first post though I've been a visitor for a while!

Hi. I understand sweet potatoes like the warm weather, but this year I'm buying some purple potatoes from oikostreecrops.com, that have been behaving perennially for them for nine years in zone 5. You could probably grow any ol' potato where you are pretty easy.

Geez, zone 9... :p

I live in a border zone 8/9 I can grow potatoes yr round but they do better in the cooler mos than in the heat. I will be shading potaotes this yr to see if that helps.
