All I can say is... WOW!! I didn't need to the pictures--the University of Illinois has student housing allotments--about 3-4 acres, across the street from the housing units. The U of I is a "land-grant school," and they are the biggest land owner in our county. I've read several of your links. I can see why you follow the sites and the blogs. It's like looking at gardening in a microcosm. You and the rest are certainly experts. Thanks for sharing this and the other stuff that you are so generous to share with us. :hugs

Hi ducks4you,

Thank you for your enthusiasm, Nice to have you with us! Have you got any links or photos of your local project as we would love to see them.

I'm trying to show everyone the extent small groups of people will go to to grow good nourishing food for their families & friends.

BRING ON THE SPRING & planting time. :D

REALLY enjoyed that, Hattie. It was "done" really well. Was hoping that it would continue, that being the first year.

I noticed, as I have noticed, in so many of the pictures that the pathways and areas not planted are, a very lot of the time, left "wild". I really like that idea and it goes, completely, against the way gardens are done, over here. Hahahaha, you won't see grass pathways in gardens, here......no sireee, gotta have all of the garden to have that harsh, sterile look.
Well, not for me. Have decided to use sectioned beds with "wildness" and flowers, everywhere else. Seems that it would take no longer to strim as it would to weed unplanted areas.

Thanks for my morning "fix".

Why the clear 1 liter bottles on sticks?
Hi wifezilla :frow

1. We use a lot of canes in our gardens & there are a lot of accidents (poking in the eye aint no fun).

2. They rattle & flash in the sun & wind so they deter the birds.

3. Some people stuff a little straw in neck of the bottle to catch the ear-whigs, they can be a menace here.

A three-fold benefit.....!!

Hi boggy b, :frow

I too wanted more & I suspect there might be -- so I'm going to do a search -- I'll keep you posted. It may be that they had such a bad year (huge areas of the UK were neck deep in flood water last year) that it was useless to blog it.

I know some of our allotments in my area were washed away -- it was heartbreaking for the owners. Luckily I live on a hill, with well-draining soil (plus I grow my veg in raised beds) so it wasn't quite so bad for me. But I still lost all my tomatoe plants & curbits to blight.....!! :hit

So funny, someone suggested we used those cellophane balloons in the garden for the same idea. They even scare off deer! Great in berry patches.

I sometimes use the mirrored-plastic bladders that are inside my wine-boxes. I blow them up through the spigot......!! I also use them for resting my squash & marrows on. The slugs hate them along with the birds & it also reflects the sunlight up onto the fruit. The only problem is your neighbors can calculate how much you are drinking...........!! :p :gig  :gig
