Shallots are an absolutely favorite crop to grow. I was looking at the little French ones today and thinking, "it won't be much longer!" The big purple ones beside the French Greys are monsters but nearly all have produced seed heads this year.

I have never saved seed from these hybrids and don't remember so much flowering from them. I guess I really should have removed those stalks but we will see how they turn out. This is the first year in quite a few that I haven't had, at least, some growing from seeds. So, they are all from saved sets.

I grew a purple bell pepper once. I guess I was hoping that if it turned purple then it would be sweeter than my usual green bells. No, they started out purple and, altho' they did fine, they were just about the same level of sweetness as their green neighbors.

Major', I had no idea that North Carolina was so far ahead of my garden. After this stormy day, my peppers will get a blast of heat, the WS says. They really don't look much different than when I set the plants out a month ago! Of course, the eggplants in my garden look worse! I don't know if it would be wise for me to plant more pole beans. I'll get some more bush bean seed in the ground soon, tho'.

You and your garden are inspirations, Major'! I am curious how the next part of your growing season goes.

I have one single little bitty butternut squash plant that is on it's last breath thanks to the bugs. it produced what was going to be a gorgeous butternut squash - one mind you. since the plant is done, do I treat the squash like a summer squash & just cut it up & saut or whatever - or do I try to dry it. I don't know what to do with this half grown little beauty that never got the chance to be all she was going to be.
I bake my butternut squash till i can put a finger print in it. then I scoop it out add butter brown sugar and cinnamon. It is so Yummy! you can also peel and and boil it like potatoes

Major I neded to get some of those walking onions!! where did you say you got them??

R those purple peppers? Never saw those before
They are called tequila, they are lilac in color as the grow and heavy bearing
Had to harvest them today to make room for the others to grow.

Did pull the squash plants today they were past their prime, wow just think
with all that space what to plant there now?
As well plant some more carrots nothing like a fresh carrot
just pulled with a quick wash off and nibble it down to a nub.

with the weather forecast calling for heavy rains tomorrow
Looks like a good time to clean and trim up the garlic and put away

rolled out of the house this morning to finish up weed eating in the raised beds, our neighbor came over thanked me for mowing their yard, asked her do you like beans? yes the kids love them.
pointed to the yellow beans and told her they could pick all of them, come back a few minutes later with her boys told them to just pull up the whole plant and pick the beans off and throw the plants in a pile on the other side of the fence.
< arterially motive.. they pulled and picked and all i had to do was run the mini tiller though there and replant>
Sounds like a Tom Sawyer garden! Not too bad.....got them to pull up the beans and get them out of your way!

I am glad to read this because now I have hope I may get some peppers and eggplant. I usally never really have trouble with pepper plants, but I put them out even earlier than you did. I have lost some of them and some of my eggplant.

One of my jobs for the day will be to get some fertilizer on the peppers and eggplants.

They have sat on that ground and made zero use of the fertilizer I put in it about 6 weeks ago. Meanwhile, the rain has fallen the sprinklers have run. I'd like to think that there has been something going on with the roots but now may be their first real chance to grow! They shouldn't have any nutrient deficiency.

The fertilizer always seems to work best when it can be covered with soil or compost. Hopefully, the plants will think that they have suddenly found themselves in a warm, wonderfully fertile world and after weeks of stalling can get with the program.

the elephant had little bulbs coming off the bottoms of them so saved them see what happens this october

after a thorough sorting they are now sitting in the junk room on a vent to finish curing.

chores are done for the day what now :hu nothing good on tv, guess i could re-read all the seed catalogs and see what is needed for this fall.
