I would build a memorial garden and place them there. They are a symbol of what happened and we need to pay our respects to those that lost their lives.
I was only two or three when it happened. So you can guess how unimportant it was to me at the time.
It would be neat if you could get a stone pillar of stone pillar of some kind made, have the flur de lis set in the pillar, and have a commemoration of some kind carved right underneath of it - "in memory of those who lost their lives..." The pillar can have a slab of stone set on top of it to shield the flur de lis from the elements a little bit. The pillar could be in the center of your commemoration garden. I could only imagine how long something like that would last.
Just thinking out load here...
edit: not sure if "commemoration" is the word that I was looking for here.
I haven't seen what she has, we are going to try and get togather this weekend. Red if not to heavy will send you one. I remember how many men it took to carry in my granite counter top.
I am so glad that you decided to make them part of your garden. Being right there in the state where this disaster occurred makes it even more important.
I wrote the above yesterday. I thought your call meant you were keeping them. If you are serious about sharing I would seriously consider doing a road trip should the Post Office be unable to manage them.
What's bad? I'm retired. I'm free to travel if I wish. The color should be fantastic in your neck-o-the-woods.
Seriously, I've been thinking about them and their historical value and would probably consider finding a place at the Janesville Rotary Gardens where they/it would be properly displayed in a place of honor.
My husband was one of the many who spent weeks up there helping to clean up the debris. He brought home a couple of tiny pieces of metal and such. I have them and his hardhat (signed by all the celebs who came by) on a special shelf in the living room. There is nothing creepy about treasuring something that is part of world history.
Like Red - if you decide to pass them along, I would LOVE to have one.
