ducks4you......I just love Kermy.

Spring....well I guess I have to weight in again...it has to be the birds. First, there is what I call....the food-fights. Them there birds get to a fussin and a fightin and they dont pay me never no mind anymore.and it's like I am not standing there and then whammy there is a ball of feathers that bounces off my hat and into the bushes. They have hit me in the head a few times. (These head injuries may become more evident over time. :plbb ) They are either fighting over food or sex. I don't ask.

Then there are my resident ring neck doves. They are so sweet. I am not sure if it is the male or female. However, it is going all over my yard picking up pieces of straw and grass and then dropping it because it not the right one. They are so picky. It all looks so chaotic but it carries the rhythm of the day. :coolsun

I forgot about the frogs! I had never heard them until I moved to our house. We have a creek across the road, and that has absolutely become my favorite sound of spring.

Digits, I have absolutely noticed the lengthening of days! :) My DH & I keep commenting - 'Look, it's 6:15-6:30-6:45 and not completely dark yet."

Also, DH works for the ski slopes here, so a BIG sign of spring is when they close in March, and he's not working 10-hour days, 7 days a week.

I'm going to jump back in here: Damummis, you are on an island in the Great Lakes if I remember right . . . is that correct?

I spent the winter once in the Deep South, as I've sometimes heard it called. But, I'm just wondering these days how much the lengthening days are noticed.

NMbirds, you are at a high elevation and not far south in that very large state of New Mexico. Still, you are probably not above 35 north latitude.

Some of us are "careening" towards a 12 hour day on the 20th. The change in the hours of daylight are just incredible for me here near 48 north. Some here in the US will experience a 2 hour increase in daylight but I will go from 8 hours :( of daylight around the first of the year - - to 12 hours !!

The change must be dramatic for folks living farther north!! And no, I'm not planning to move up there just to find out . . . ;)

Steve

edited to say, More robins here!
Hi Steve,

Just to give you an idea of how it is here in the deep south, right now......Today, sunrise was at 6:06 am and sunset was at 5:40 pm.

I'm almost there, Boggy! But, watch out . . . I'll be passing you on the curve!

When you've got a 5:45 am sunrise and an 8pm sunset (DST) - - I'll be dancing around with an extra hour on either side of you:

:weee

(Some of this spring enthusiasm may partially explain why I'm dragging my sad carcass around in the dark during December and January every year . . . . )

Oh wow... totally forgot about that one! I forget EVERY year like clockwork. ;)

Ok... that good "spring is on the way" feeling, its gone! I work up to an inch of ice and snow ick in my yard. I can't remember the last time it ever snowed in March in NC. Its had to be more then 15 years now?! WOW... blows my mind... and bums me out. :/

The geese have returned to my IL's pond and we've seen several flocks heading north.

The Saturday chore is list is getting longer and longer as the weather starts to cooperate.

The chicken pen is nearing completion and babies will be here in a couple weeks.

My kids are insisting that 50* is warm enough to wear flip flops to school.
I am north of you and no sign of geese here yet. There is a large pond on the other side of the tree line where they stop off (some stay) and no sign at all. :( I haven't seen any signifcant melting on the ponds yet either. :idunno

Still winter here- but...you can go outside without 3 layers on- and you don't have to do the old lady hunch. (Which is what I call it when you hunch over to try and get your ears and chin inside your coat!) The snow is melting really fast now. Mud season is on the way! The chickens will leave the coop without bribery involved! 17 days till spring!
