Seriously long stretch of bitter cold here. If it were December or January it would not be noteworthy, however for February this is very odd for our area. I think we may have broke records for the overnight low of -9C(16F). We have lots of sunshine in the forecast at least; it's so nice to get out for a walk to enjoy the pristine beauty of nature when there's snow on the ground. My fava, sweet peas, some lettuce seedlings, and even trays of ranunculas are coming in at night for warmth and then going outside for a few hours each day for bright light and fresh air. Good chance I will have to keep moving these plants in and out for at least another week. Oh well. Such is the life of a winter gardener. 🥶
I love the pic with the Mallard! 😍

the cold tonight is being made tougher with the winds which started kicking up last night.

currently 15F with wind chill down to 0F. not a great time to have the furnace not working all that well but we're muttering along ok so far. i need to get up in a half hour and get the house warmed up more upstairs. i'm letting the furnace run now for a while to make sure the crawlspace gets warmed up before i kick on the oven.

even without the furnace working too well the little tiny space heater kept the house above 65F for over six hours last night. i fell asleep early so waking up at 4:30am to pee and check on things. all ok. wide awake though. :) my room is about 10 degrees cooler with my door closed so that will change as soon as i keep my door open and have the oven on. 15-30 minutes and the house will be at 68-70F and Mom will be up for her morning coffee.

forecast for today is sunny and 27F, but we have five even colder nights coming up.

sorry i'm rambling on and repeating the same stuff but it's about the only excitement i get these days... :)

i was sitting and talking to Mom this morning and we both remarked at the same time how strange it was for me to do that. i am not usually very talkative (despite how much i type here :) ) in general unless i've had chocolate or coffee and even less talkative in the morning.

furnace guy did not make it out yesterday but i did talk to him on the phone for a while and got my questions answered and he will be stopping over today to check on things. my brother might be here for lunch so if timing works out they can talk - they know each other from High School.

he can get the job done a few weeks sooner than the other bid we've already got so there's a good chance i'll go with his offer if it is reasonable enough.

Snowing again. Very light and the temperature has been warm enough that the salt on arterials has done a good job in clearing the roadways.

Not clearing the secondaries — I am waiting and waiting for the plow to close our driveway. It won't accomplish much more than that in the short run. The ice on the asphalt will remain. It has been 5 days since our first February snow and there has been plenty of cars and school busses going by. At least, some snow will be closer to the curb where it will remain for the days of melting but that ain't comin any time soon. We may have our first below zero F showing up before Valentine's Day puts frosting on the cake!
