Those are some great looking tomatoes! Are German Giant and Old German related at all? It may seem like a funny question, but I have been learning a lot in this thread.
I've grown Mortgage Lifter a couple times. I don't get very many tomatoes off of them and they were actually not that big. I'm giving them a try one last time this year to see if they deserve to take up any space in my garden anymore.
Just went down to my cellar to see what I need to replenish this year. I didn't realize how little I had left down there!
Tomato juice
Tomato sauce
Tomatoes with roasted green chilies
Corn salsa
Cucumber salsa
Sauerkraut
Potatoes
Pickled peppers
Dilly beans
Dill pickles
Dill spears
Cowboy candy...
My favorite heirloom hands down is Old German. My favorite hybrid is Lemon Boy. These are the only two plants that produced incredible quantities with high quality in my garden last year. I put them in sugar sand soil that only had a light amount of chicken poo in it. The plants were fertilized...
Just set 7 Blue Andalusian eggs under one of my Black Copper Marans and 7 Blue/Black Orpington eggs under the other. I bought them from a local 4H girl. Spoiled hens have the whole meat bird coop to themselves. Both of them ripped out all of their breast feathers to fluff up their nests a bit. I...
All the tomatoes and peppers went in the ground last weekend. Also put in the cucumbers, summer and winter squash, onions, beans, peas, pie pumpkins, and potatoes. I am planting the watermelons, muskmelons, sunflowers, radishes, spring onions, carrots, and other miscellaneous things.
Has anyone ever used Spray-N-Grow fertilizer products before? I got a catalog about a week ago and have been doing some research and it looks like great stuff but a little spendy for how much I would need. I trust my TEG friends the most, so can I get some testimonies or opinions on this stuff...
Your starts look great! It has been super rainy in my part of MN as well. At least we got lots of sunshine today and warmth. That was nice. Starting to harden my plants off- I won't plant them until the first weekend in June just to be safe.
I plan on putting the plants in the middle of the mats. I have a small tiller for in between the rows.
I have used dehydrated onions in recipes before, never thought of drying them myself. I usually go through so many onions with canning season- last year we went through a 100lb bag!
We had a friend come over a couple days ago with a tractor to till up our garden. Well one thing led to another and we ended up expanding one of the larger gardens so I could include more watermelon varieties and squash varieties. Not to mention all the dozens of varieties of tomatoes and...
Not this year, but last I dropped a whole flat of seedlings on the carpet. I could only salvage a few but had no idea what they were. The carpet still has a dark spot from the wet dirt. I have tried shampooing it so many times. Now the plants go in the basement over the cement.
Last year I also...
I think those feathers might be from a Blue Jay because of the length and the stripes. I can't believe how well you were able to capture the sheen of the feather. I see there were also my hydrangeas, my personal favorite. About the only thing coming up through the ground around here is my chives...
I just love Iris'. They are so beautiful. I have a few different varieties but they have taken a lot of gruff from the gophers around here. It seems like once they finally get established, the gophers start chewing on the bulbs. I had a variety my grandma gave me that were almost a nuisance...
Let's see....my dad just turned 50. Does that make anyone feel old? ;) hehe
I really enjoy the variety of ages and backgrounds on this forum. So many different ideas but so many similar personalities. Love it!
