I tried them again this year....no fruit and scrawny plants. The first year they were in 1/2 wine barrels so I "forgave" them. But this year the plant was in the ground. Poor weather, but other varieties are doing just fine :idunno

I have an old but clear memory as a child regarding canning jars with similar rubber gasket seals. They had metal lids, and rings, but the seal was the rubber kind like the "new" tattler ones. These old lids were so old that the rubber gaskets were crumbling and cracking and so we switched to...
Thanks :D It was a fun and easy project for the kids. I diced some up the other night and seasoned them with first press/cold press olive oil from my dad's orchard, bread crumbs, garlic salt, and some extra Pappy's seasoning. I then baked them at 400 until they were crisp. Wow, did they taste...
Here's my first ever potato harvest for 2011. I planted two 1/2 wine barrels as a fun project for my kids:) The potatoes were a bit small and I didn't get a whole lot, but I think the heat and the fact they were in potting soil was the issue. The purple and pink/red fleshed potatoes were a hit...
I bought some seeds from Baker's Creek this year and so far have had weird results with my Asian melons. I bought the "Early Silver line" and out of the 3 seeds I planted from that packet I've gotten 3 different types of melons. One looks almost like a lemon cucumber (light yellow with darker...
I do agree :) Shop local and made in the USA as much as you can. It's just interesting to share other's ideas (like my sis's) sometimes. I do like to get both plastic and paper bags someimes as I re-use them at home. But, Walmart seems to be the absolute worst for the shear number of bags per...
My sister has another view on paper and plastic bags at grocery stores. Here is her opinion:
Paper bags and plastic bags generally are made in the USA by Americans from recycled renewable reasources or by-products of the gas and oil industry. Both are recyclable and therefor generate even more...
I think your blueberry looks pretty healthy. I always think about this saying about newly planted shrubs and trees:
The first year they "sleep"
The second year they "creep"
The third year they "leap"
So, just wait a bit and they should respond with good growth:)

They do tend to sprawl out of bounds. If space is limited, look for the "bush" type summer squash there's many varieties available now. They behave better and take up less space. Sometimes it's hard to find the seeds for the bush type, but their out there.

Beautiful :rose :thumbsup
I bought 2 roses for myself for mother's day. I almost bought "Enchanted Evening" it smelled so good at the nursery, but decided on "Sweetness" a grandiflora instead because the plant was looked healthier and they didn't have much to choose from. The other rose was...
I don't know if I can find the link, but I read that after you wash the lettuce you should soak the lettuce in a vinegar/water solution for a few minutes. I think you rinse it again, but I can't remember:( It's supposed to reduce bacteria and keep the lettuce safer for storage.

I'm trying the mangles for the first time. I only planted a test batch and have 5 very healthy plants after thining the seedlings. I got the seeds from Baker Creek and they had a 100% germination rate. They are growing like weeds. My chickens like the greens too. If this "mini-crop" goes well...
Hi Steve,
From what I've read, some varieties are quite tolerant of higher pH. One gardener did recomend adding a bit of vinegar when he watered his blueberries. Soil sulfer also helps a lot and that's what I use because our soil and well water pH is pretty high too. At my old place the summer...
:thumbsup Blueray is a good one! The others you got are really good too :) Here's a link to a nursery that has a lot of variety descriptions :) Note that there are 3 pages for the different types, I almost missed that the first time...
I am now the foster parent of about a 1000+ tadpoles (most likely all tree frogs). My kids and I rescued them from the seasonal stream at the edge of our property. The water in the last puddle was about to dry up. They are now living in a rubermaid tub and we're feeding them greens, dog food...
