Or you could just let the clover take over - I never planted a lawn out back, it's a weedy, crab-grassy mess, some would say, but the bees love it. The white clover is winning, evengually that's all that will be out there, I think - oh, and dandelions.
I never got around to eating it, either, but it was luxurious looking in the garden, and I packed salt marsh hay all around it before the snow happened - my fingers are crossed that it makes it through the winter!
The discussion isn't about seed dealers going out of business, it's about one company monopolozing germplasm so as to lock anyone else out of the market. There seem to be several, if not many, independent seed houses that are doing just fine keeping genetic lines going without the 'help' of a...
They are buying up seeds so they can work on patenting anything and everything, so they have control over all seeds via genetic patents. I avoid them like the plague.
We're in a mild spell right now, the 18" of snow is melting away a bit, thankfully that blizzard hit on a Saturday night, so most people were able to deal with it on Sunday (when they really wanted to be finishing up their Christmas shopping!), things were back to normal for the most part on...
Oh yea, we all got a raise this year! :gig
Actually the only payment required is a nice forum where we can all share and learn. Thank you all for your support. :hugs
For cutting flowers, I'd go with zinnias, cosmos, etc. They may get a bit leggy in the shade, though, so you'll have to provide a bit of support. Larkspur would do well, too. Much better to get some more light in there, somehow, limbing the trees or somesuch. I'm surprised beans did well...

We got snow yesterday, and lots of wind (I was watching the pine trees behind the coop, they looked like they were going to snap!) then it went to rain, and last night the high tem was 54 - until the cold front, with thunder and lightning, went through - this morning it's 36 out right now. It's...
the simple life has it exactly right. Mint can be easy to pull, but did you get all the roots? Most likely not. Always be mindful of where you put your mint, and be vigilant in pulling every sprout that isn't going where you want it to go. Best to contain it somehow, with barriers of some...
I didn't even know they sold fresh frozen hominy, I buy the canned stuff, if I can find it - it's not easy to find up here in the frozen Northeast! I worked with a girl from Oklahoma and she couldn't believe what we ate around here that passed for 'Mexican' food. She said it was awful compared...
Yes, it will, it's very volatile. I've got mine in a good Tupperware container, marked in permanent ink to be careful!! I actually got a quantity of it from a Swedish bakery a few towns over - they were surprised I wanted it and know what it was for! They gave it to me :)
Thank you, Hattie, good info there! :) Here is a nice link for Springerle cookies. They sell the molds there, but there's also great info, recipes, etc. for all kinds of molded cookies. I've used their recipe, it makes lots of cookies! I did find a source for the baker's ammonia, you've got...
Yes it does self-sow vigorously, but I love it, and so do the honeybees, as well as all the other pollinators. It's a great plant to have as a 'weed' ;)
