If I can scrape the cash together, I'm looking at spending about $50 on some medicinal herb seeds from a seller I found on ebay, going to start getting a tea and medicine garden going. They've got good sized packets for a dollar each, so I should be getting 40+ different things.
Since Arizona...
Two more LaMancha does due next week, and a Nigerian Dwarf due in March.
Baby lambs are really sweet too. I'm hopefully getting an East Friesian ewe very soon.
Indeed. Corn that is sold for human consumption is higher in price than feed corn all the time. It isn't usually the same corn, the stuff sold for animal feed is not considered safe for human consumption...I've bought bags of feed corn that have a warning label saying not safe for people to eat...
I inherited a top-bar hive from a friend who moved out of town. It is easy to build them, and it doesn't look like a beehive, which is probably what you're going for living in a neighborhood. Mine is a 55 gallon plastic barrel cut in half longways and set on legs, then the bars are placed on...
That is a huge egg!
My EE that hatched in February still hasn't started laying, though all of my young birds this year started very late, they are nearly a year old and just getting going. It might still be a while for yours, I have heard that EEs can take a long time to start.
Meet the two new additions to my farm. They were born just before sunrise this morning after wearing mom (and ME) out all night trying to be born.
Both are boys. We were hoping for a girl, but oh well. Everyone is healthy and doing well, so that is what counts.
That's my system too. I don't buy straw because it is the same price as hay here. So I feed the hay to the goats, they toss everything that doesn't meet their standards onto the ground. I rake that up and put it in the nest boxes for the chickens and ducks, and when it gets dirty enough to...
If you want to save space, you can also grow them in containers. I've seen people do it in 5 gallon buckets. This year I am trying a method where they grow in trash bags...I'm using empty plastic feed sacks. I put some drainage holes in the bottom, put a little soil in the bottom of the bag...
You can internet search what planting zone you are in. You should be able to find a map with different colored areas that denote the zones. The zones are based on when the first and last likely dates of frost are in your area. Not incredibly accurate, but it's a good start.
You can start...
Yeah, I've seen what they say. I was just looking for information/tips/opinions from real life, everyday people like myself trying to grow this thing, I don't trust the information provided by someone who is trying to sell me a product quite as much.
I do have chickens. They are fenced out of the garden area though.
Hmm....it might not do so well in the heat here then. We get 100+ degree summer weather for weeks at a time. Oh well, worth a try, right? If they grow, they grow. If not...whatever.
I'm getting some seeds for hardy kiwi. I've never grown it before, and can't find much on the internet except a whole lot of mixed reviews. My climate should be good, we don't really normally have much of a winter, and spring starts here in early February with no more frosts after that...I'd be...
How warm should it be out before I can plant my potatoes? I'm getting my planting schedule all planned out and realized I'm not sure when to plant those. Looking around online, a lot of places said February 14th is the day to plant potatoes, but I don't know if that's necessarily so in the...
