Alpine strawberries don't really send out runners like the other types....at least from what I've observed. They don't spread as much, but their fruit is very small as lesa mentioned (yet sweet and flavorful!). I've heard they can reseed themselves well.
I've had good luck with alpine...

I'm going on my second year as a certified Master Gardener! (well I have the title but I dunno if it's necessarily true :P) I would definitely recommend the program to anyone that is interested. It's a great way to expand your gardening knowledge, support...
This year I planted Mammoth Russian Sunflowers for the chickens...they grew well and the chickens liked them. I set a few heads at a time in the run, shucked off a few seeds to get them started, and they figured things out quick. ;)
I also planted extra cabbage for the chickens...they love it...

Is this plant wild or is it something that was planted as an ornamental?
The leaves remind me of Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica). I've seen it around here occasionally in MI planted as a spreading groundcover.
I have 4 tomatillo plants that I bought on a whim this year...they started producing recently, and so far we've just been chopping them up and adding them in w/ fresh salsa....mmm. :)
If I get enough ripening at once I would like to try a small batch of salsa verde...

Sorry to hear the news.... :/
I'm having the same problems w/ the borers on my zucchini and squash plants. They REALLY did a number on the zucchini plants (store-bought plants)...I don't think there is really much left of their main stalks. I was about to rip them out a couple weeks ago, but...
