We had a terrible time with that on Cherokee Purples last year. A friend of ours with about 50 plants of them did too. And the bigger they were, the more likely they split. *sigh*. I didn't grow them this year for that reason.
Anyway, we found that if we picked them early and ripened them on...
Looking great! LOL...DH looked over my shoulder and says 'what are those plants, sunflowers?' (Not wearing his glasses.) When I answered 'no, tomatoes!' he says "wow!"
You inspire me. I intend to remain as able as you are at age 80.
How have I missed this thread?!? I'm so happy for you!
Blackberry always sells like crazy for us too. And Raspberry does well - if you can find the fruit, try it.
You might ask them if they get requests for sugar free jams as well. I sell a fair amount of them.
We're having a fairly good season with ours:
Overall we escaped blossom end rot with the exception of just a few single tomatoes here and there.
German Johnson and Mr Stripey: Both set fruit well, some very large tomatoes, nearly over now. These are 'standards' for us every year.
Black...
GMOs are not a cross like a typical hybrid plant, fish or animal. GMOs are created by genetically altering the DNA of an organisim. The DNA is 'split', reconfigured by adding a component gene from other species, and then put back together. There is nothing natural about the process - plant and...
For eating fresh we like BLTs, sliced tomatoes, green fried tomatoes, pastas w/fresh chopped tomatoes, garlic and olive oil.
We like to can tomatoes in 3 basic versions.:
- Whole or Crushed Tomatoes
- Tomatoes w/Peppers & Onions
- Tomatoes w/Corn & Okra
During the year we open these and add a...
Pumpkin should be pressure canned, and cubed, not mashed or pureed. WB canning pumpkin is not safe.

Oh No! So sad to see that (but thanks for the news).
GMOs tread on dangerous ground IMO. We avoid anything made from GMO corn and soy. Now fish. :barnie
Looks like lots going on at Lone Pine!
I keep saying we need a Facebook page. We have customers who say they've linked to us from their FB pages. Guess I'll set one up in my spare time. :gig
Kathy - Thanks for the link. Wow...they are a big CSA! Lots of good ideas on their website. Very helpful.
Vfem - Hope you get your jams added to Lone Pine. How fun for both of you.....and yummy for the members! Our folks really enjoy the jams. They look forward to each new fruit in-season...
Lesa - good to know, thanks. Our members can do the meat option only, and purchase produce 'al a carte' as desired. Flexibility and accommodating members needs seems to help quite a bit with attracting and satisfying members.
Another thing we're doing is accommodating vacations. We set-up the...
Is this your first time growing them? This is our first year with them. We just loved them! Good texture, lovely color, and very sweet. Also pretty on the plate mixed with some standard red beets for color. Yum!
We're replanting last week, this week, and probably some next week too. We've put...
I cannot subsist on a diet of alfalfa pellets. *grin*
What I like about weight watchers is - it's kind of like everything in moderation. You really can eat anything, but you have to add up the points (similar to calories), keep the portions down, and not too much high calorie food(s) in one...
Thanks WZ! - I did get a lot of ideas from that info. For one, I need to post a page like that on our website! :)
Lesa - Our members get a standard box each week with preselected items. based on what's in season. However, we do work with people and exchange things in the boxes - for example...
Do any of you run a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) or maybe are a member of a CSA?
DH & I have one with 33 members in one farmers market, and 12 members in another market.
I'd like to compare notes, share ideas, etc. if this interests anyone.
I have a favorite phrase that applies to situations/ideas/innovations like GMOs.....
"Do not mess with Creation, for you are small, insignificant, and biodegradable."
DNA is best left alone.
edit: typo
DH & I quit smoking 3 years ago...well, it'll be 3 years in a couple more weeks....July 23rd. We took Chantix. There is nothing I've enjoyed more than FINALLY being a non-smoker.....errrr, except for the weight gain.
It took 18 months to go from 120 lbs to 154 lbs. Ouch! I started working on...
